Mas Cerveza, Por Favor!

A thoughtful chronicle of my study-abroad experience at the UDLA in Mexico...and by that I mean a collection of wild stories about crazy things I will do in Mexico and some other random, non-important things.

Trip to the ZOO!

Being the strong independent woman I am, I decided to venture solo to the Mexico City Chapultepec zoo on Saturday the 18th since its free. It was "bring your handicapped mexican child to the zoo day". But seriously, it was the "Amigos de Teleon" annual trip to the zoo. (Amigos de Teleton are like a group that volunteers with handicapped kids and raises money for Teleon, an organization that helps the disabled.) It was very sad to see all those kids, but nice that so many people volunteer, I think there was at least a 1 volunteer to 1 kid ratio, and probably 200 kids there, so that was nice.

Anyway, a zoo is a zoo no matter what country its in, so I won't go into too much detail about the exhibits. (I did pay 35 pesos (3.50usd) to go see the Butterly Paradise and the Bug Palace. Butterflies were very cool, bugs were very creepy.)

I thought these photos were cool cuz its got some skyline in with the zoo. (Fun fact: If you click on the photo it will get bigger in a new window. Cool!)

Spring Break(s)!

This year, I'm joining that elite club of youngn's who get not one but two springtime vacations! (No, I'm not talking about elementary/middle/highschool February and April vacations...) I'm takin' 2 weeks off of work to enjoy life! WOOO HOOO

S.B. 1
When: March 4 - 11
Where: Mexico City
Who: The Boyfriend
What: Some touristy things, and some not so touristy things.
Why: Cuz he loves me and wants to see what life is like south of the border.

S.B. 2
When: April 7 - 15
Where: Cancun
Who: The Girlfriend, aka Liz
What: Hostels with Harry Potter themes, topless beaches?, sand, sunblock, surf, sol (the sun) and Sol (the Mexican beer).
Why: Cuz we both have bathing suits with the price tags still on them that we had to find a use for by the end of April or they would self distruct. Oh, yeah. And the flight and hostel were pretty damn cheap.

If anyone wants in on SB2, let me know.
Volaris for the flight, and HostelsWeb for the hostel. You can do it all online. Technology rules.

Absence makes the heart grow fungus

...thats a line from a barenaked ladies song I think, and the first time I heard it I cracked up, and since then I can't ever hear the expression "absence makes the heart grow fonder" without thinking of it. Anyway, there's a point to this. I'll get to it now.

So after doing some AIM Away Message Stalking the other day, hereon referred to as AMS, I came across various messages with a recurring theme: couples doing the "long-distance thing". For example, I encountered messages like (names changed to protect privacy of the losers): "Honeybunneysnugglepoo, I can't wait to see you this weekend. Only 3 more days til we're together again!!! (insert kissy face emoticon here)" or, on a Sunday night after a weekend visit of the long distance lovers, "I had such a great weekend with you, Sweet Cheeks, it feels like forever til I get to see you again on Friday, you're the best boy/girlfriend in the whole world!" or event the uncreative, impersonal "Miss u babe." I could go on, but I won't. Since then I've decided to cut down on the AMS for sanity reasons and also because from time to time the messages make me throw up a little bit in my mouth, and that just is gross. I searched deep down for some sympathy for those poor unfortunate souls, but alas, couldn't seem to find one ounce of sympathy/empathy/compassion/etc for them. And this is why:

1. Long distance = what?? He lives in Brighton, she lives in Allston? You're a T ride apart, stop whining. He goes to school in NYC, she goes to school in Boston? You're an Amtrak ride/Fung Wah bus ride apart, quit bitching. Etc, etc, etc.
2. Cell phones help the situation. When she's missing her KissyFace so much she just can't go another minute without hearing his voice, Muffins can just pick up her Verizon phone and use her IN minutes to call KF for FREE. It's like you can be virtually together whenever you want, so STFU.

I'm a multiple-layover airplane ride/20 cents per minute by landline phone call away from my CuddleBug. What now?

Horrifying.

This morning, as I was walking to work around 9:15am, minding my own business, trying not to trip over all the cracks in the sidewalk, I was violated. That's right. Violated. (No I wasn't raped. I wouldn't be blogging about that.)

A sneaky Mexican pervert, age range about 20-25, decided that instead of starting his day with a rush of caffeine, he'd start his with an adrenaline rush, and that the best way for him to achieve aforementioned adrenaline rush would be to grab some Gringa ass as I walked by. And then sprint away as fas as he could. Classy, real classy.

If I wasn't wearing heals I would have booked after him and kicked, not grabbed, HIS ass.

Gracias, Dios, que nada peor paso.

Phil is an idiot.

Of course the stupid groundhog didn't see his shadow. Does he ever? When was the last time you can remember NOT having 6 more weeks of winter?? It seems like its a clear day just about every Feb 2.

Which leads me to another point: Why if he does see his shadow because it is a clear day with sun, does that mean more winter, when if we arrive at the contrary, if he doesn't see his shadow because it's a cloudy dreary day, does that mean winter is over?? To me, sun = warm, spring and cloudy = cold, wintery. Right?

WRONG.
I think it's all a scam. And people buy into it. People, it's an overgrown rodent. It can't speak. Why would you let something like that dictate when winter ends?!

At least someone was nice enough to debunk all the GroundHog Day myths.

At least it's sunny and warm here in Mexico...
